THE ATLAS LINGÜÍSTICO DE LA PENÍNSULA IBÉRICA (ALPI), DIRECTED BY TOMÁS NAVARRO TOMÁS

This CSIC page is devoted to the ALPI (Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula) and brings together information about the historic Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI by its Spanish acronym), originally thought of by Ramón Menéndez Pidal and directed by Tomás Navarro Tomás at the Centro de Estudios Históricos in the 1920s and 1930s. It also provides information about the processing and editing work currently being coordinated by the CSIC to make these unpublished materials available.

As is customary in Linguistic Geography, the ALPI will allow us to project the results of fieldwork onto maps that reflect the spatial distribution of responses to the questionnaire. Those data also allow us to study Peninsular Romance varieties from the early years of the 20th century and contrast them with more recent linguistic trends.

As the processing and editing progresses, the survey materials can be consulted here, via the database, and different types of maps can be created from them. In this initial stage, the Search tab will soon allow access to the responses to ten ALPI questions, specially collated so they can be consulted and mapped as an example of what the finished publication will look like. In the Gallery tab, you will find a collection of the precious photographs related to the ALPI, from the Lorenzo Rodríguez-Castellano collection. This page will also progressively include references to studies based on ALPI data, and to the extent possible, links to the studies themselves.

The person in charge of the contents of these pages is Pilar García Mouton, Research Professor at the CSIC and coordinator of the ALPI publication project, with the help of a team that includes Inés Fernández-Ordóñez (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid-Real Academia Española); David Heap (University of Western Ontario); Maria Pilar Perea (Universitat de Barcelona); João Saramago (Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa) y Xulio Sousa Fernández (Instituto da Lingua Galega da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela).
